Regulation for Education and Exam Applications for Students with Disabilities

 

Eastern Mediterranean University Rector’s Office made the following regulation according to Article 32 of Eastern Mediterranean University Education, Examinations and Success By-law with the Senate’s approval.

 

 

CHAPTER I

This regulation is titled as “Eastern Mediterranean University Regulation for Education and Exam Applications for Students with Disabilities.”

Description

2.

Unless otherwise stated in this regulation;

"Persons with disabilities" refer to individuals who encounter difficulties in integrating into society as well as taking care of their daily lives because of an impairment in their physical, mental, psychological, emotional and social skills at varying degrees due to causes that may be present either from birth or at a later stage in life and, at the same time, to individuals who are in need of rehabilitation, counseling and support services, or to individuals with thalassemia or sickle-cell disease who have certified their disease, regardless of its degree, at health institutions either within the TRNC or in their own countries.

“The Rector’s Office” stands for the executive organ of the university.

“The Senate” refers to the academic organ of the university

All other terms appearing in this regulation have the same meaning with those stated in Eastern Mediterranean University By-law for Education, Examinations and Success, from which the current regulation originates.

 

Aim

The aim of this regulation is to provide equal opportunities in education and positively contribute to the success of students with impairment by eliminating the problems they may encounter during their studies and exams in their respective associate, undergraduate and postgraduate programs in Eastern Mediterranean University.

Scope

4.

This regulation covers the arrangements made for disabled students registered at Eastern Mediterranean University’s associate, undergraduate and postgraduate programs in the elimination of problems occurring due to their disabilities during their course and examination practices.

 

 

 


 

CHAPTER II

PRINCIPLES FOR COURSE APPLICATIONS

 

Course  Applications

The following items describe the support to be provided for disabled students in the elimination of problems they may encounter, both prior to and after the course, due to their impairment. 

 

 

 

(1)

In classes where students with hearing impairment exist, the seating arrangement is planned in such a way that such student/s has a clear vision of the academic staff member delivering the course,

 

 

(2)

The course instructor teaching in classes where students with hearing impairment exist presents the lesson facing the students.

 

 

(3)

In courses involving computer applications, students with visual impairment are provided with computers with audio applications.

 

 

(4)

Students with visual impairment are allowed to record the course with a voice recording device.

 

 

(5)

In courses containing visual materials, a description of the visual material is provided for students with visual impairment so that they understand the content of the material.

 

 

(6)

Prior to the course, relevant course materials are provided in an audio format for students with visual impairment to enable them to listen to the said materials in the electronic environment.

 

 

(7)

Classes with students who have physical impairment are located on the most suitable floor.

 

 

(8)

Instructors who deliver courses in classes containing students with impairment take into consideration the type of said disability while preparing course related materials such as slides, presentations, cine-vision and overhead projector materials.

Course Exemption

In the event of students with impairment applying for course exemption due to their condition, an equivalent course, if any, is assigned to the student instead of an elective course. If there is no equivalent course or if the course is a compulsory one, the relevant course is assigned to the student under the support of the relevant technology or programs.


CHAPTER III

PRINCIPLES FOR EXAM APPLICATIONS

 

 

Exam Applications

The following items describe the support to be provided for disabled students in the elimination of problems they may encounter, both prior to and after the exam, due to their impairment: 

 

 

 

(1)

Exam rooms are organized taking into consideration the ease of accessibility for students with impairment.

 

 

(2)

Any announcements, reminders or corrections about the exam or exam questions are delivered by exam invigilators with a consideration of the type of impairment of a student or students.

 

 

(3)

Upon demand, students with impairment are allowed to sit for the exam with supporting equipment or tools.

 

 

(4)

Upon demand, in written exams, a member of the academic staff who possesses knowledge about the course on which exam is based or the relevant department’s terminology is assigned as a reader or scriber for the student with impairment.

 

 

(5)

Upon demand, students with impairment are allowed to put down their responses for exam questions via computers.

 

 

(6)

In line with the request of the students with visual impairment, the exam booklet or paper may be prepared in Braille or voice format.

 

 

(7)

For students with partial visual impairment, the exam booklet or paper is printed in large font.

 

 

(8)

Students with visual and/or hearing impairment, and/or attention deficit and/or hyperactivity disorder and/or dyslexia or dysgraphia disorders are placed in a separate exam room as a single test-taker so that they do not disturb or get disturbed by other exam takers.

 

 

(9)

Two-third of the exam duration is assigned as extra time allowance for students with visual impairment who sit for the exam with a reader/scriber or an exam booklet with large font, or for students who lack mobility or manual dexterity,

 

 

(10)

In line with demand,  students with impairment are allowed to bring medicine, medical equipment or liquids (e.g. insulin pump) into the exam room.

 

 

(11)

In line with demand, students with impairment are allowed to visit the restroom under the assistance of the exam invigilator during the exam.

 

CHAPTER IV

FINAL PROVISIONS

 

Unspecified Conditions

8.

For cases which are not prescribed in this regulation, decisions taken by the Senate, upon the recommendation of the relevant disabled student’s department or faculty board, are implemented.

 

Coming into Force

9.

This regulation comes into force from the date of its approval by the Senate.

Executive Power

10.

The Eastern Mediterranean University Rector’s Office has the ultimate responsibility for the execution of this regulation.
