DOUBLE MAJOR GRADUATE PROGRAMS REGISTRATION, ADMISSION AND APPLICATION BY-LAW

 

(Eastern Mediterranean University Senate has made the following by-law in accordance with Article 16 of the By-law for the Institute for Graduate Studies and Research Foundation, Operation and Working Principles.)  

 

 

I. GENERAL PROVISIONS

Eastern Mediterranean University Double Major Graduate Programs Registration, Admission and Application By-law.

 

Aim

2.     

The aim of this by-law is to determine the principles and regulations for a Double Major Graduate Degree (Dual Master’s Degree/Double Master Degree Program) to be obtained either by studying two graduate programs at Eastern Mediterranean University or a graduate program carried out within Eastern Mediterranean University and another one offered by a university with which Eastern Mediterranean University has a collaboration protocol.

 

Definitions

3.     

(1)

Double Graduate Degree Program refers to studying two different graduate programs concurrently.

 

 

(2)

In this by-law, the “First Major Program” refers to either the field in which the student obtained his/her undergraduate degree or the first closest program. The “Second Major Program” refers to the graduate program of the department from which the student wishes to get the second graduate diploma, in addition to the diploma of the first program.

  

 

 

II. MAIN PROVISIONS

The Opening and Operation of a Double-Major Graduate Degree Program

4.     

(1)

A Double Major Graduate Degree Program is opened with the decision of the Institute Board and the approval of the Senate following the specification of the conditions for the admission and graduation requirements, joint courses and mutual credit transfer issues relevant to the program by the relevant department(s). The aforementioned program is run by the collaboration of the relevant departments.

 

 

(2)

A Double Major Graduate Degree Program may be formed by programs carried out within Eastern Mediterranean University or by one of the programs carried out within Eastern Mediterranean University and the graduate program of another university which has a collaboration protocol with Eastern Mediterranean University.

 

 

(3)

A Double Major Graduate Degree Program may either be run by one department or by different departments working in collaboration with each other.

 

 

(4)

A Double Major Graduate Degree Program may be formed by two programs with thesis requirements or two without thesis requirements or one program with a thesis requirement and another one without thesis requirement. 

 

 

(5)

In the event of two programs having thesis requirements, the thesis supervision is carried out separately in each program. The students register for the thesis study and seminar course in both programs.

 

 

(6)

Advisorship services for a student registered to a Double Major Graduate Degree Program is provided by the department to which the First Major Program is attached.

 

Application and Admission Conditions 

5.     

(1)

Candidates who fulfill the application conditions for graduate studies at Eastern Mediterranean University may apply for Double Major Graduate Degree Programs. However, some departments may ask for additional qualifications on top of the minimum requirements from those who will study at Double Major Graduate Degree Programs.

 

 

(2)

All students registered at one of the Eastern Mediterranean University’s graduate programs and at a graduate program of a university which has a collaboration protocol with Eastern Mediterranean University may apply for Eastern Mediterranean University’s Double Major Graduate Degree Program. 

 

 

(3)

In his/her application, the candidate indicates that s/he wishes to follow the Double Major Graduate Degree Program.

 

 

(4)

Students who have already registered to one of the relevant programs may apply for a transfer to the Double Major Graduate Degree Program.

 

 

(5)

The application of each candidate is separately evaluated by the Graduate Studies Commission of both programs.

 

 

(6)

For a candidate to be eligible to study at a Double Major Graduate Degree Program, s/he has to fulfill both program’s admission conditions and gain admission to both programs, accordingly.

 

 

(7)

A candidate may apply for more than one Double Major Graduate Degree Program but may not simultaneously register or study at multiple Double Major Graduate Degree Programs. 

 

 

(8)

Those who have gained admission to a Double Major Graduate Degree Program are required to register to the relevant Double Major Graduate Degree Program within the relevant semester’s course add-drop period.  

 

Program Requirements

6.     

(1)

Students undertake the responsibility of fulfilling the graduation conditions of each program separately. However, if there are common courses between the programs, common courses may be specified on the condition that 50% of the total credit load of the program with fewer credits has not been exceeded.  

 

 

 

(a)

If the Double Major Graduate Degree Program consists of two programs with thesis requirements, it includes a total of 11 courses with total 33 credits as its minimum credit value, two seminar courses and two thesis studies. The maximum number of credits allowed for common courses between the two programs is 9.  

 

 

 

(b)

If the Double Major Graduate Degree Program consists of two programs with no thesis requirements, it includes a total of 15 courses with 45 credits as its minimum credit value and two projects. The maximum number of credits allowed for common courses between the two programs is 15.

(c)

If one of the two programs forming the relevant Double Major Graduate Degree has a thesis requirement and the other has no requirement as such, the program includes a total of 14 courses with 42 credits as its minimum credit value, a thesis, a seminar course and a project. The maximum number of credits allowed for common courses between the two programs is 9.

 

 

 

(d)

In cases where the Double Major Graduate Degree Program is formed by a program carried out at Eastern Mediterranean University and the other program carried out by a university which has a collaboration protocol with Eastern Mediterranean University, the issue of credit transfer is determined by the other university’s relevant by-laws.   

 

 

(2)

Courses to be included in the Double Major Graduate Degree Program are determined by the relevant department boards.

 

 

(3)

For students registered in the Double Major Graduate Degree Program, a separate transcript is prepared for each program.

 

 

(4)

Courses that are common in both major programs appear in the semester registration of each program and are displayed on both transcripts.

 

Duration

7.     

(1)

The duration of the Double Major Graduate Degree Program is minimum four and maximum eight semesters.

 

 

(2)

A maximum period of two semesters may be granted for students studying at the Double Major Graduate Degree Program.

 

 

(3)

A student who freezes his/her registration in one of the graduate programs is considered to have frozen registration in the second program.

 

Semester Leave

8.     

A student who is granted a semester leave of absence in the First Major Program is also considered to be on a leave of absence in his/her Second Major Program.

 

Course Withdrawal

9.     

In the event of a student wishing to withdraw from a course that is common in the First and the Second Major Programs, the process of withdrawal will take place in both programs and this will be reflected on both transcripts.

 

Success and Dismissal in the Program

10.   

(1)

A student cannot graduate from a Double Major Graduate Degree Program without fulfilling all designated requirements.

 

(2)

Students who wish to leave the Double Major Graduate Program of their own accord should submit a written petition to the department which offers the First Major Program until the last day of the add-drop period. Applications submitted after this period are put into practice at the beginning of the following academic semester.

 

 

 

If a student wishes to leave the double-major graduate degree program after having fulfilled the requirements of one of the graduate programs, s/he may apply and receive the diploma of the program for which the student has fulfilled the graduation requirements.

 

 

(3)

If the student wishes to leave the Double Major Graduate Degree Program without having fulfilled none of the program’s requirements and wants to continue his/her studies in a single graduate program, his/her duration of study is recalculated with a consideration of the aforementioned student’s previous semesters of study. In this regard, the minimum period of study is two and the maximum is four semesters.

 

Graduation and Diplomas

 

11.   

Students are granted two separate diplomas. The structure of the program of study is described in the diploma attachment/transcript.

Other Matters

12.   

Any provisions not clearly defined in this By-law are subject to the provisions of the “By-law for EMU Graduate Programs, Registration and Admission” and “By-law for EMU Graduate Studies and Examinations”. Matters that are not covered anywhere in this by-law are subject to the decisions of the Institute Board.

 

 

 

III. FINAL PROVISIONS

Executive Power

13.   

This By-law is executed by the Rector’s Office of Eastern Mediterranean University.

 

Coming into Force

14.   

This By-law comes into force following its approval by the Eastern Mediterranean University Senate.
